If you have been browsing the “Organized Clutter” section of this website, I must first advise you to seriously consider if there is something more productive that you could be doing. But you probably noticed that we are attempting to learn German and are proceeding at a record slow pace. Nevertheless, progress is being made……. Here, without further delay are two of the most important verbs in the German language in their infinitive form.
sein
haben
The first is the “to be” verb in German and the second is the “to have” verb. These words must temporarily replace their English counterparts until the German section of your brain is properly developed. Time for a tangent…..what follows is a three-step process for permanently changing your brain to include a section for a second language. Warning: This could really mess you up!
First, it is assumed you have made a commitment to learning this language. We don’t do anything half-@$$^& here at Organized Clutter, so this commitment implies that until you can speak German, you will attempt to replace English descriptions of your thoughts with those of German. This commitment is step one.
Next, allow your brain to think of anything that comes to mind with the phrase “to be”. Try to avoid the specific and attempt to construct an abstract image that encompasses every possibility of the words “to be.” Now capture this abstract feeling/sensation/visualization/crazy trip. You have completed step two.
Finally, hold on to this abstraction in your mind and repeat sein until the abstraction is now associated with the new German word. In this manner, you can associate your thoughts with words from this new language. Over time, the abstractions will adjust slightly depending on new associations caused by the sound and feel of the foreign word. Repeat this process exchanging “to have” with haben.
If you don’t really understand the process described above, go to sleep….wake yourself up at 3:24 AM….force yourself to read this post before you regain full consciousness…and then you will understand it perfectly fine!
